Mike Cooper (Reading, Uk) è musicista, compositore, cantante, autore, improvvisatore, chitarrista slide, “collagiste” del suono, artista radiofonico, architetto del suono e performer per film muti. Ha inciso numerosi dischi e colleziona camicie hawaiiane.

Il film. Prima di fare ritorno all’atollo natio, un vecchio pescatore rievoca la sua giovinezza quando la Polinesia non era stata ancora aggredita dal progresso tecnologico, dal turismo di massa e dall’inquinamento e il mare era un fratello carissimo e terribile. Girato tra i pescatori polinesiani degli atolli Tuamutu, il settimo lungometraggio del grande documentarista italiano Folco Quilici, è un film sincero e sentito senza concessioni al facile folklore.

Mike Cooper for the past 40 years has been an international musical explorer, performing and recording, solo and in a number of inspired groupings and a variety of genres. Initially a folk-blues guitarist and singer songwriter his work has diversified to include improvised and electronic music, live music for silent films, radio art and sound installations. He is also a music journalist, writing features for magazines, particularly on Pacific music and musicians, a visual artist, film and video maker, collector of Hawaiian shirts and appears on more than 60 records to date.

The movie. Before heading back to his native atoll, an old fisherman evokes his youth when Polynesia had not been stormed yet by technological progress, by mass tourism and pollution, and the sea was a beloved and terrible brother. The 7th Folco Quilici’s feature, filmed between Polynesian fishermen on Tuamutu atolls, is a sincere and heartfelt movie with no concessions to easy folklore.

Creazione video realizzata col sostegno della Cineteca di Saint-Etienne e della fabbrica TASE (Vaux-en-Velin). Prima proiezione francese, 18 dicembre 2014, alla Maison des Arts Plastiques di Champigny-sur-Marne (Paris). / PREVIEW ABSOLUTE. Just in front of a dormient loom, some images and ordinary tales stay still and unroll like a tight and fragile rope. Video creation made with the support of the Film Library of Saint-Etienne and the factory TASE (Vaux-en-Velin). First French show, December 18, 2014, at the Maison des Arts Plastiques of Champigny-sur-Marne, Paris (France).

Il video è un primo viaggio nello Spazio alla ricerca di un luogo per la Rivoluzione. Il panorama sonoro è una stratificazione di brani elettronici, suoni ambientali, versi poetici e registrazioni analogiche (vhs, tapes o bobine). Il linguaggio musicale, metaforico ed empatico, a volte procede per accompagnamento a volte si distacca per aggiungere senso. Il suono è pura fantascienza: non c’è nulla che trasporti il suono nello spazio, oltre l’atmosfera terrestre. Quindi c’è Spazio. Se non c’è Spazio per la Rivoluzione sulla Terra, magari ci viene meglio nello Spazio. / ABSOLUTE PREVIEW . The story is about the first trip into universal space in search of a place and opportunity for us to make “the Revolution”. The soundscape is made of a layering of electronic musics, ambient sounds, poetic verses and analog recordings (VHS, tapes or reels). The music language, both metaphorical and empathic, at times proceeds by accompanying, sometimes detaches itself in order to add meaning. The sound is pure science fiction: there is no such a thing that transports the sound in space, but the earth’s atmosphere. So there is space. If there is no space for the Revolution on Earth, we may be better off finding such opportunity in the Space itself!
