Lo zoo di Qalqilya Zoo , in Palestina, è l’unico al mondo situato in un territorio occupato. Dr Sami Khader è il veterinario dello zoo e vuole farlo conoscere a livello internazionale per migliorare la condizione dei propri animali e poter ottenere nuove giraffe dopo che le due che aveva sono morte durante l’ultima intifada. Per raggiungere quest’obiettivo ha bisogno che lo zoo entri a far parte dell’EAZA, l’Associazione Europea degli Zoo e degli Acquari. Riuscirà a raggiungere i suoi obiettivi? O sarà anche questa un’ennesima utopia palestinese? La risposta a questa domanda non ci mostrerà solo la passione e la caparbietà di un individuo, ma sarà anche un originale, a volte divertente, parallelo con la realtà della situazione israelo-palestinese.

IL PROTAGONISTA > DR. SAMI KHADER
Dr. Sami Khader è nato in Arabia Saudita da una famiglia di profughi palestinesi. Ha studiato veterinaria all’università di Riad e si è poi sposato con Khitam conosciuta in Cisgiordania. Ha ottenuto cosí la green card che gli ha permesso di trasferirsi in Palestina. Da allora lavora come veterinario per il comune di Qalqilya occupandosi degli animali dello zoo. La sua passione per la taxidermia l’ha portato a realizzare all’interno dello zoo il primo museo di scienze naturali della Palestina. In questo museo entrano a far parte tutti gli animali che muoiono nello zoo, incluse le beneamate giraffe.

IL REGISTA > MARCO DE STEFANIS
Nato a Roma, MARCO DE STEFANIS iniziato la sua carriera in Italia a lavorando come montatore e in seguito come regista per la RAI, Discovery Channel e History Channel. Tra il 1999 e il 2000 ha lavorato come regista freelance per la RAI facendo brevi reportage dal Nepal, Egitto, Colombia e Messico. Dal 2001 vive in Olanda dove ha deciso di espandere il suo know-how frequentando il “Documentary’s Director Coaching Program” al Binger Film Institut di Amsterdam. Tra i suoi documentari, “Lieve Monster” ha vinto nel 2006 il premio come Miglior Documentario Straniero al Danville International Children Film Festival in California e partecipato a più di venti festival in giro per il mondo. Il documentario “Tulip Time” coprodotto da RAI e la televisione olandese MAX, ha vinto nel 2009 come Miglior Film per la Televisione al Jewish Eye Film Festival in Israele. Il suo ultimo lavoro Waiting for Giraffes ha avuto la premiere lo scorso novembre in concorso all’IDFA.

Una parte del ricavato sarà destinato a finanziare la proiezione pubblica del film a Qalqilya (Palestina).

SYNOPSIS (UK)
Veterinarian Sami Khader (Dr Sami) dreams of becoming member of international zoo association EAZA in order to welcome new giraffes in his zoo. The zoo in Qalqilya, a small city on the border of the Israeli occupied West bank, hardly manages to survive after having lived through two intifadas during which they lost part of their livestock, most notably the giraffes. The non-cooperative Israeli’s authorities sometimes seem to be the least of his problems.

Will Dr Sami succeed in joining the international zoos community and having giraffes walking around in his zoo again one day? Or will this become another symbol of the Palestinian Utopia? The answer to that question does not only show the passion and endurance of one individual, but also gives a unique, sometimes humoristic, parallel to the reality of the Israeli-Palestinian situation.

THE PROTAGONIST
Dr Sami is without a doubt the film’s protagonist: a passionate vet, with a big heart for animals, but without being sentimental about it. When giraffe Brownie died and one of his staff members was crying, Dr Sami asked him if he had shed as many tears for the human victims of the intifada. Officially, his task is to keep the animals healthy, but dr Sami’s many skills push him much further. He is also a collector, designer, guide, decorator, repair man and taxidermist. On his initiative, the zoo built the first and only Natural History Museum in Palestine. Due to the political and economic situation Dr. Sami has to be practical and original in his approach on solving problems, helped by his understated sense of humour. 

THE AUTHOR
Marco De Stefanis is a filmmaker from the Netherlands whose documentaries have been shown in several film festivals around the world. Among his works: “Waiting for Giraffes” (EO/2016 – Netherlands/Palestine) in competition at IDFA 2016 for Dutch Competition, “Damned Children” (UNICEF/2012 – Dem. Rep. of Congo), “Tulip Time” (MAX/RAI/2008 – Netherlands/Italy) winner “Best TV Documentary 2009” at JewishEye Film Festival, Israel, “Lieve Monster” (BINGER/2006) winner “Best Foreign Short” at Danville Int. Children FilmFest, USA.
