Marx and Engels meet cute in this intense, fervent film about the early development of communism from I Am Not Your Negro director Raoul Peck. It’s a sinewy and intensely focused, uncompromisingly cerebral period drama, co-written with Pascal Bonitzer, about the birth of communism in the mid-19th century. It gives you a real sense of what radical politics was about: talk. There is talk, talk and more talk. It should be dull, but it isn’t. Somehow the spectacle of fiercely angry people talking about ideas becomes absorbing and even gripping.

Detained is an absorbing observation from within a Swedish immigration detention centre for rejected asylum seekers. The film follows detainees and staff over the course of a summer. A mother separated from her children faces deportation, a young man waits for his life to begin, and staff members struggle with the impersonal bureaucracy required of their job. With great sensibility to its characters and environment, Detained depicts the silent psychological horror faced by those held in modern detention centres and questions this crucial, global phenomenon.

British film icon Michael Caine narrates and stars in ‘My Generation’, a vivid and inspiring story of his personal journey through 1960s London. Based on personal accounts and stunning archive footage this documentary sees Caine travel back in time to talk to The Beatles, Twiggy, David Bailey, Mary Quant, The Rolling Stones, David Hockney and other star names.
The film has been painstakingly assembled over the last six years by Caine working with producer Simon Fuller, writers Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais and director David Batty. Telling the story of the birth of pop culture in London through the eyes of the young Michael Caine, and using carefully intercut audio of Caine’s conversations with his co-stars blended with unseen archive material to take the viewer back to the heart of the 1960s.

Pierre, a thirty-five-year-old dairy farmer, has taken over his parents’farm and devotes twenty-four hours a day to his cows. They are all for him so when an epidemic breaks out, threatening his herd, he gets terribly anxious. Even the assurances of Pascale, his veterinarian sister, that everything is fine, do not soothe his anxieties. And – quite unfortunately – his fears prove founded since one of his animals gets infected. The shock is severe because one cow touched means that his whole herd will be slaughtered. But Pierre is not going to let that happen.

Financial inequality, lack of vision, fear and anger especially towards asylum seekers, has been growing rapidly in Europe, also in Finland. People are increasingly afraid that their home environment is becoming unrecognizable and undesirable. Populist demagogues have risen to harness these fears and to raise people against each other.
In the middle of all this turmoil are two men, Oula (46) and Tapio (71). Although they disagree on almost everything, they have decided to continue their weekly discussions in a public sauna in Helsinki. They continue because they respect each other, and because they understand that when conversation ends, violence begins.
“Boiling Point” is an award-winning documentary film by director and writer Elina Hirvonen. The film paints a shocking image of contemporary Europe, but also looks for a common ground between strongly opinionated groups of people.
