Utilizzando il materiale d\u2019archivio e quello inedito, viene raccontata in modo intimo la storia di Kusama, attraverso le sue stesse parole e le toccanti interviste a direttori di musei, galleristi, curatori, critici, collezionisti, amici e collaboratori. Esito di oltre un decennio di attivit\u00e0 della regista, il documentario getta una nuova luce su una protagonista assoluta dell\u2019arte contemporanea del Novecento e della nostra epoca. La sua storia personale e professionale si intrecciano, il trauma di essere cresciuta in Giappone durante la seconda guerra mondiale in una famiglia che scoraggiava le sue ambizioni creative, gli esordi non facili in Patria, il trasferimento a New York dove era ostacolata dal sessismo e il razzismo che caratterizzavano il mondo dell\u2019arte a cavallo degli anni \u201960 passando per i problemi connessi con la sua salute mentale fino ai giorni d\u2019oggi.<\/span><\/p>\n

Divenuta ormai l\u2019artista pi\u00f9 popolare al mondo, ideatrice di abbaglianti e fantasiose creazioni a poise conosciuta ai pi\u00f9 per le enormi zucchecolorate e le sue Infinity Room, Kusama continua a dedicarsi all\u2019arte a tempo pieno realizzando innumerevoli opere che abbracciano varie discipline come la pittura, la scultura, l\u2019arte performativa, il design e registrando con le sue mostre record di pubblico nei principali musei internazionali.<\/span><\/p>\n

Il film fa parte del progetto ACROSS.VIDEO ideato e curato da Cristina Nistic\u00f2 dal 2004 per il Detour. Dal 2016 collaborano al progetto Ornella Vaiani e Vera Fusco.

Kusama – Infinity explores artist Yayoi Kusama\u2019s journey from a conservative upbringing in Japan to her brush with fame in America during the 1960s (where she rivaled Andy Warhol for press attention) and concludes with the international fame she has finally achieved within the art world. Now in her 80s, Kusama has spent the last 30 years living in a mental institution in Japan.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Kusama – Infinity is a feature documentary about Yayoi Kusama. The film explores Kusama’s fierce determination to become a world-renowned artist. Kusama was born into a conservative family in rural Japan and she made her way to America on the heels of WWII. There, without connections and speaking only broken English, she devoted herself to her one true love, making art. On her first day in New York, Kusama has stated that she climbed to the top of the Empire State Building, looked down upon the city below, and made a decision to stand out from everyone she saw below and become a star.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n
