Un vivido ritratto cinematografico che esplora la vita e il mondo immaginativo di M.C. Escher attraverso le sue stesse parole e visioni.<\/span><\/p>\n

L’universo artistico di Escher viene esplorato come se lo vedessimo con i suoi stessi occhi – \u00e8 lui stesso a “raccontare” il film (con la voce dell’attore Stephen Fry) attraverso estratti dai suoi numerosi diari, lettere e note – e mostrando molte sue opere, alcune delle quali interamente inedite. Mentre Escher racconta la sua vita e la costante ricerca per trasformare pensieri e riflessioni in forma visiva, le sue opere galleggiano sullo schermo e l’animazione ne valorizza i movimenti intrinseci.<\/span><\/p>\n

Il viaggio della sua vita ci porta anche in luoghi come Ravello e Roma, o l’Alhambra di Granada, che lo ha particolarmente ispirato. Assistiamo alla sua ostinata determinazione a padroneggiare la tecnica del disegno e l’evoluzione del suo lavoro in cui le riflessioni matematiche assumono via via un ruolo determinante, fino a spingerlo a mettere in discussione il concetto stesso di arte.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tra costruzioni geometricamente impossibili, squilibri del piano e mutazioni dello spazio, spicca l’esplorazione dell’infinito, che per l’artista rappresenta un vero e proprio viaggio. Un uomo che ha reso la definizione di universo infinito nella sua opera, riuscendo a rappresentarlo in una costruzione che cattura l’occhio umano e lo trasporta in un viaggio onirico. Un uomo geniale, un artista (dell’)infinito.

Escher\u2019s artistic universe is explored as if we\u2019re seeing it through his own eyes \u2013 he \u2018narrates\u2019 the film (voiced by Stephen Fry) via excerpts from his many diaries, letters and notes \u2013 and across a cornucopia of his works, many of which have never been shown before. While Escher recounts his life and his constant search to turn his thoughts and musings into visual form and to create the immaculate woodcut prints he could see in his mind\u2019s eye, his works float on the screen, animation enhancing their innate movement.<\/span><\/p>\n

His life\u2019s journey also takes us to the places, such as Ravello and Rome, or the Alhambra in Granada, which particularly inspired him. We witness his dogged determination to master drawing technique \u2013 he considered that any schoolboy with a little aptitude would be better at drawing than himself \u2013 and his work\u2019s evolution as mathematical concerns take precedence, leading him to ponder whether what he is creating is even art.<\/span><\/p>\n

Contributions from two of Escher\u2019s elderly sons, among other people, further enrich the profile of this complex and driven man, at times bemused by the vast appreciation his visions on paper engendered and dismayed by the placemats or garish, psychedelic posters they were turned into without his consent, little imagining the enduring influence in popular culture of his imaginings. <\/span><\/p>\n
