Disgustato dallo sfruttamento dei pescatori di perle in Polinesia e dal degrado ambientale, un medico bianco alcolista approda su un’altra isola, ancora incontaminata dove, grazie all’amore di un’indigena, trova una nuova ragione di vita e di riscatto. Ispirato all’omonimo libro di viaggio del 1919 di Frederick O’Brien, che trascorse un anno nel sud pacifico con i nativi isolani, Il progetto iniziale del film prevedeva una collaborazione tra il grande documentarista etnografico Robert Flaherty e la MGM. Pi\u00f9 tardi,a causa di attriti produttivi causati dal ritmo di lavorazione giudicato troppo lento dalla MGM, Flaherty pass\u00f2 il testimone della regia a Van Dyke.\u00a0Flaherty riusc\u00ec comunque a girare alcune scene prima di lasciare la produzione, che sono state poi inserite nel montato finale (es. la scena della laguna nella giungla). Il film \u00e8 noto per essere stato il primo della MGM ad avere una colonna sonora pre-registrata.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mike Cooper<\/strong> (Reading, Uk) \u00e8 musicista, compositore, cantante, autore, improvvisatore, chitarrista slide, “collagiste” del suono, artista radiofonico, architetto del suono e performer per film muti. Ha inciso numerosi dischi e colleziona camicie hawaiiane.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Matthew Lloyd, an alcoholic doctor is disgusted by the exploitation by white people of the natives on a Polynesian island. The natives dive for pearls. However, numerous accidents occur and one diver dies. In anger, Dr. Lloyd punches Sebastian, the employer. As revenge and to pr
\nevent <\/span><\/em>furth<\/span><\/em>er interruption of his activities, he tricks Dr. Lloyd onto a ship with a deceased crew (thinking they are ill) and his men rough him up and send the ship off into a storm. Dr. Lloyd survives and is washed ashore on <\/span><\/em>an island where no<\/span><\/em>ne of the natives have ever seen a white man. The film is based on the 1919 novel of the same name by Frederick O’Brien, who spent a year in the South Pacific with native islanders. The film began production in 1927 as a co-venture between documentary filmmaker\u00a0Robert Flaherty\u00a0and MGM.\u00a0It is known for being the first MGM picture to be released with a pre-recorded soundtrack. <\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

For the past 40 years Mike Cooper has been an international musical explorer, performing and recording, solo and in a number of inspired groupings and a variety of genres. Initially a folk-blues guitarist and singer songwriter his work has diversified to include improvised and electronic music, live music for silent films, radio art and sound installations. He is also a music journalist, writing features for magazines, particularly on Pacific music and musicians, a visual artist, film and video maker, collector of Hawaiian shirts and appears on more than 60 records to date.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
