Tratto da fatti realmente accaduti, il film descrive\u00a0la lotta spontanea per l’aumento del salario di un gruppo di operai di una vetreria in un piccolo centro\u00a0nel\u00a0Lancashire inglese, che decidono di prendere in mano il\u00a0proprio destino e organizzare autonomamente\u00a0una protesta \u00a0in contrasto con\u00a0gli stessi\u00a0dirigenti sindacali.<\/p>\n

<<Cos\u00ec, un tipo mi dice “Scriverai un film su di noi?”, e io ero molto impegnato nel lavoro in quel periodo. Gli rispondo “Non ho tempo per farlo”. Allora il tipo mi dice “Vieni\u00a0con me, ti mostrer\u00f2 le mie medaglie di guerra”. Cos\u00ec andiamo in bagno, si sfila\u00a0la maglietta, e mi mostra la schiena lacerata, come frustata col\u00a0vetro. Si rimette la maglietta e mi dice\u00a0“ho lavorato tutta la mia in questo posto, non ho mai scioperato e adesso mi dicono che se non faccio il crumiro, mi negheranno la pensione.” Alla fine il tipo si rifiuta di fare il crumiro e finisce senza pensione a fare le pulizie\u00a0in un negozio a St. Helens. Questo \u00e8 ricatto morale. Allora ho detto “S\u00ec certo, lavorer\u00f2 alla sceneggiatura del film.>> Jim Allen sceneggiatore di\u00a0The Rank and File<\/p>\n

When a pay discrepancy continues without any resolution, glass factory workers turn to their union for support. But when it is not forthcoming, they take things into their own hands.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

<<So, one old bloke said to me, “Will you write a film for us?” And I was really up to my neck in work, committed. I said, “I’m pressed for time.” So this old fella said, “come to the toilet with me, I’ll show you my ‘war medals’.” We got to the toilet and he whips his shirt off, and his back was lacerated, as if he’d been whipped by glass, and then he put his shirt back on. He said, “I’ve worked here all my life, never been on strike and I’ve been told that unless I scab, they’ll take my pension away.” Anyway, this fella refused to scab, and he finished up with no pension and he was sweeping up in a Co-Op shop in St. Helens. Well, that was moral blackmail. So, I said, “yes, of course, I’ll write a script.>> \u00a0Jim Allen, screenwriter of The Rank and File<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The series gained a reputation for presenting contemporary social dramas, and for bringing issues to the attention of a mass audience that would not otherwise have been discussed on screen.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
